Giovani Bernard rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown while Mohamed Sanu had 10 receptions for 120 yards and a TD for the Bengals (3-1-1), who were without star receiver A.J. Green (toe). Andy Dalton, who was 33-of-43 for 323 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, quickly moved Cincinnati into position for the potential game-winning kick after the teams traded field goals on the first two series of overtime.

Cam Newton passed for 284 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and added 107 yards and a TD on the ground for the Panthers (3-2-1). Tight end Greg Olsen caught six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown while Kelvin Benjamin also had a scoring reception.

Newton and Benjamin connected for a 3-yard TD late in the first quarter to open the scoring, but the Bengals tied it on Dalton's 5-yard scoring pass to Brandon Tate before taking the lead on Bernard's 89-yard touchdown run. Trailing 17-10 at halftime, the Panthers pulled even on Fozzy Whittaker's 4-yard TD run two plays after Antoine Cason's 80-yard interception return, and Newton's 12-yard scoring run capped a 77-yard drive and gave Carolina a 24-17 advantage.

Dalton's 34-yard scoring strike to Sanu tied it again before Newton and Olsen hooked up for a 13-yard TD with 4:50 left to put Carolina back on top, but Adam Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to set up Jeremy Hill's 3-yard touchdown run a play later to tie it at 31. Reggie Nelson's interception set up Nugent's go-ahead 38-yard field goal with 2:11 left, but Graham Gano atoned for an earlier miss from 38 yards with a 44-yard kick to force overtime.
