Jon Kitna threw three touchdowns and ran for another and rookie Bryan McCann scored on a 97-yard punt return as the Dallas Cowboys handed the Detroit Lions their 26th straight road loss with a 35-19 victory on Sunday.
Kitna, who played for the Lions from 2006-09, threw two scores to Miles Austin and another to rookie wideout Dez Bryant, helping the Cowboys (3-7) pick up their first home win and second straight victory under interim head coach Jason Garrett.
Kitna capped his huge day by scoring from 29 yards out on a naked bootleg on 4th-and-1 late in the fourth quarter.
Shaun Hill threw touchdowns to wide receivers Nate Burleson and Calvin Johnson, but it wasn’t enough to give the Lions (2-8) their first road win in over three years.
The Cowboys received another big play from McCann, who returned an interception a franchise-record 101 yards in last week’s upset of the New York Giants.
Midway through the third, John Wendling tried to tap Nick Harris’ punt back into play near the goal line, but it went right to McCann, who raced up the left sideline to give Dallas a 14-12 lead with 9:16 left.
Kitna’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Austin gave the Cowboys a 21-12 advantage late in the third quarter. Hill answered with a 14-yard touchdown to Johnson, but Austin’s 4-yard score put the Cowboys ahead for good.
