Posh Alexander scored 23 points and had five assists and Montez Mathis and Julian Champagnie each added 16 points for St. John's, which took control of the game in the first half and went on to an 83-69 victory over Fordham in a nonconference game at its on-campus arena in Queens, N.Y.
Dylan Addae-Wusu had 11 points and 11 assists for the Red Storm (6-2).
Chuba Ohams scored 20 points, Darius Quisenberry added 16 and Antonio Daye Jr. had 13 for Fordham (6-4), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
St. John's opened the second half with a 12-6 run to go ahead 58-39 with 15:19 to play. Champagnie had four points during the run, including the last two on a fast break off a behind-the-back pass from Alexander.
Josh Colon-Navarro's four-point play with 13:34 left, when he was fouled while making a 3-pointer, cut Fordham's deficit to 60-51. But the Red Storm scored the next seven points before Antrell Charlton made a 3-pointer for the Rams to trim it to 67-54.
However, Fordham didn't get closer than eight after that as the Red Storm maintained a comfortable lead.
St. John's started hot from 3-point range, making its first four on its way to a 17-10 lead. Conversely, the Rams missed their first five attempts from beyond the arc before Quisenberry connected from the right corner to cut the deficit to 17-13. He then hit another trey from the left wing to slice the Johnnies' lead to 17-16.
Quisenberry's straightaway three-pointer with 9:59 left in the half gave Fordham a 22-21 lead, and the Rams still trailed only 29-27 after a two-point basket by Quisenberry with 7:36 left in the half.
But once again, the shots stopped falling for Fordham, and St. John's also turned up the defensive pressure. The Rams managed only six points for the rest of the half as St. John's finished the first 20 minutes on an extended 17-6 run, which featured nine points from Alexander. He had 11 points during the half.
