Alondes Williams scored 32 points and he had plenty of help from Daivien Williamson as Wake Forest defeated visiting Western Carolina 87-75 on Friday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Williams, a transfer from Oklahoma, has led the Demon Deacons (2-0) in scoring in both games this season. He shot 13-for-18 from the field against Western Carolina, though he missed all three of his 3-point attempts. Williams also pulled in a team-high eight rebounds.
Williamson racked up 24 points, aided by four 3-point baskets and 8-for-10 shooting overall from the field. Cameron Hildreth added 13 points in a reserve role for the Demon Deacons.
Travion McCray pumped in 21 points off the bench for Western Carolina (1-1), which was hurt by 19 turnovers. McCray made four 3s.
Tyler Harris added 13 points and Marvin Price had 10 points for Western Carolina. Cam Bacote and Nick Robinson each chipped in with nine points.
It was a homecoming for first-year Western Carolina coach Justin Gray, who was a former All-Atlantic Coast Conference guard for Wake Forest.
The combination of Williams and Williamson combined for 45 of Wake Forest's first 66 points. Then Hildreth chimed in with a pair of 3-pointers.
Western Carolina hung around, closing with 74-66 with slightly more than five minutes to play.
Wake Forest had some snags trying to ice the game by finishing 19-of-28 on free throws.
Wake Forest led 38-36 at halftime despite Western Carolina's eight 3-point baskets. That was out of a total of 13 field goals for the Catamounts, who led 31-27 with less than four minutes to play in the half.
By the break, Williams had 15 points and Williamson had posted 12, accounting for all except two of the points from the team's starters.
The teams met only once before, with Wake Forest winning that matchup in November 2018.
