Holland Woods scored 15 points, Jaelen House had 13 and Kimani Lawrence added 10 for the Sun Devils (10-12, 7-9). Arizona State, whose three-game winning streak ended, end their regular season Saturday at Utah.
The Buffaloes led by one at halftime, and the second half opened with 10 of the first 12 points coming from the foul line. Woods hit two free throws to put Arizona State ahead 37-36.
Wright sank a 3-pointer to start an 11-2 run that gave the Buffaloes a 47-39 lead with 13:39 left.
The Sun Devils chipped away behind a pair of 3-pointers from Alonzo Verge Jr. to get within 51-47 with 12:10 left. The visitors had a chance to get closer but failed to convert two offensive rebounds, and Schwartz drained a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to seven.
House hit a 3-pointer and Chris Osten split a pair of free throws to make it 56-51, but Colorado started to pull away. Wright had a layup, Schwartz tipped in Eli Parquet's miss and Wright hit a jumper during an 8-0 run that put the Buffaloes ahead 64-51 with 6:10 left.
Arizona State produced a quick 6-2 run, but Horne hit a 3-pointer and Wright connected on a jumper to make it 71-57 with 3:17 left. Lawrence made two consecutive layups to cut the deficit to 10, but Colorado was able to close it out.
Both teams got off to slow starts. They combined for three field goals and six points in the first 7:42 during which time there were a total of 14 turnovers.
Once things settled down, the offense began to flow. The Sun Devils led by six before an 8-2 Buffaloes run tied it. Woods hit a 3-pointer to put Arizona State back in front, 24-21, but Jabari Walker's layup in the final seconds gave Colorado a 31-30 halftime lead.
