David Johnson canned six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points Monday as Louisville used an early second-half run to take control in a 74-58 Atlantic Coast Conference win over visiting Georgia Tech.
Samuell Williamson came off the bench to collect 20 points and grab 18 rebounds, allowing the Cardinals (11-4, 6-3 ACC) to earn a 56-39 advantage on the boards. Carlik Jones contributed 12 points, eight assists and six boards.
Michael Devoe scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (8-6, 4-4), while Moses Wright added 15 points and 16 boards. Jordan Usher chipped in 11 points, but the team's second-leading scorer, Jose Alvarado, was held to seven on 3 of 11 shooting.
Ahead by six points at the half, Louisville decided the game by ripping off a 14-2 run in the first 5:08 to increase the margin to 47-29. Williamson capped the run with a putback, which was fitting. During that spurt, the Cardinals carved out a 13-1 advantage on the boards.
Thanks to Williamson's immense contributions, Louisville enjoyed a 20-9 margin in second-chance points and a 24-8 cushion in bench scoring. That allowed it to overcome poor shooting, as it made just 38.9 percent from the field.
Coming off an upset win Saturday against No. 20 Florida State, Georgia Tech used an early 10-0 run to grab a 14-7 lead at the 13:43 mark when Alvarado stole a pass and scored in transition.
Louisville coach Chris Mack opted for a 30-second timeout, and whatever he said to his team worked. The Cardinals quickly rattled off eight straight points to take a 15-14 edge when Williamson canned a turnaround jumper with 10:06 left.
From there, the teams most swapped the lead for the half's remainder. But Louisville was able to gain a small advantage in the last 3:57 with an 8-2 run. Williamson played beat the buzzer with a turnaround jumper as time expired, enabling the Cardinals to take a 33-27 cushion into the break.
