Hunter Tyson scored all 16 of his points in the second half as Clemson knocked off visiting North Carolina 63-50 on Tuesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in Clemson, S.C.
Clemson, which broke an 0-59 losing streak against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., last year, defeated the Tar Heels in back-to-back meetings for the first time since the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
The Tigers, who entered the game having lost four of their last five games following an 11-day pause for COVID-19 protocol, improved to 11-5 overall and 5-5 in ACC play. North Carolina, which had a four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 11-6, 6-4.
In limiting North Carolina to 50 points, Clemson held the Tar Heels to 24.5 points below their season scoring average. The Tar Heels shot 38.6 percent from the floor, including 26.3 percent from 3-point range.
Clemson led by as many as 16 points late in the first half, with a dunk by Clyde Trapp providing a 32-16 cushion with 2:12 remaining. The Tigers led by 12 at the half.
But the Tar Heels began chipping away at Clemson's lead, using an 11-2 run to cut the Tigers' advantage to four points on multiple occasions midway through the second half.
That's when Tyson took over. A junior forward, Tyson scored all 16 of his points in the final 9:20 and tallied 11 of the Tigers' final 13 points, including the last nine of the game.
Trapp added 14 points and a team-leading nine rebounds for Clemson while Aamir Simms scored 10 points. Simms also had a team-high six assists.
The Tigers shot 40.4 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from beyond the arc and have won three of their last four games against the Tar Heels for the first time in program history.
North Carolina outrebounded Clemson 38-28, but was undone by 17 turnovers. The Tar Heels were led by freshman Day'Ron Sharpe, who scored 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting. He also had eight rebounds.
The Tar Heels' Garrison Brooks had nine rebounds and eight points.
