Jay Huff scored 13 points and No. 15 Virginia won its 24th consecutive home opener with a 76-51 victory against St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers (2-1) led wire-to-wire in their first-ever meeting against the Red Flash (1-2) and improved to 10-0 all-time against current members of the Northeast Conference.
Huff made 6 of 7 shots from the field and Virginia shot 51.7 percent (30 of 58). Kadin Shedrick added 12 points, Sam Hauser scored 11 and Trey Murphy III had 10.
Bryce Laskey (12 points) and Mark Flagg (11) scored in double figures for St. Francis, which shot just 36.0 percent (18 of 50) overall and 29.2 percent (7 of 24) from 3-point range.
The bigger Cavaliers dominated the Red Flash in rebounds (38-25) and points in the paint (40-18).
Virginia led by as many as 42 points on Kody Stattmann's layup with 13:52 remaining.
Coming off a 61-60 upset loss to San Francisco that knocked them out of the top five, the Cavaliers raced to a 21-4 lead mostly with dunks and layups.
A 19-1 run to end the first half expanded Virginia's lead to 45-13. The surge included eight straight points by Tomas Woldetensae with two 3-pointers and two free throws.
Huff nearly had as many points as the entire St. Francis lineup with 11 in the first half. The Red Flash shot just 17.4 percent (4 of 23) in the opening 20 minutes, compared to 66.7 percent (18 of 27) for the Cavaliers.
Virginia shook up the starting lineup, with freshman Reece Beekman replacing point guard Kihei Clark. Clark led the ACC in minutes (37.1 per game) last season and had started 44 consecutive games.
St. Francis played without injured senior point guard Ramiir Dixon-Conover, who had 21 points in a season-opening win at Pittsburgh on Nov. 25.
