Andrew Jones didn't score in the first 17 minutes of the game, but he finished with 24 points as No. 13 Texas escaped with an 80-77 victory over Kansas State on Tuesday night at Manhattan, Kan.
Texas (12-5, 6-4 Big 12) had lost three straight and four of five coming into the game. Kansas State (5-16, 1-11) has lost 11 in a row.
Jones got his first point on a free throw at the 2:46 mark of the first half. He got his first field goal 38 seconds later. Greg Brown had 17 points, Courtney Ramey added 14 and Matt Coleman III scored 10 for Texas.
The Wildcats were led by Nijel Pack with 22 points. Mike McGuirl added 18.
Texas scored the first seven points of the second half to open its first double-digit lead at 50-39. With a 12-2 run to the start the half, the Longhorns led 55-41 less than five minutes in.
The lead reached 17 points before Kansas State gradually chipped away, getting as close as 68-64 with a 13-4 run. Texas pulled away again, but Kansas State kept coming back. When McGuirl hit a 3-pointer with 42.7 seconds left, the margin was 74-73. But the Wildcats couldn't get over the hump.
Kansas State led 14-11 at the first media timeout. The Wildcats were shooting 5-for-7 from the field, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats came into the game last in the Big 12 in scoring (61.6 points per game), shooting percentage (40.9 percent) and 3-point shooting percentage (29.3). They were 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) in the first half, including 6-for-12 from 3-point range, as they went into the locker room down 43-39.
The Longhorns, who were 5-for-35 from 3-point range in their last game at Oklahoma State, connected on eight of their 12 first-half attempts from behind the arc. They shot 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the field before the break.
Texas was led by Brown with 14 first-half points, but he picked up his second foul with 6:06 left in the half. Ramey added 10. Kansas State was led by McGuirl and Pack with 10 points each before intermission.
Overall on the night, each team shot 51 percent from the floor, but the Longhorns hit 13 of 26 3-point attempts while the Wildcats made 10 of 24.
