Davion Mitchell scored 27 points and Jared Butler added 21 as No. 2 Baylor turned it on in the second half to run past sixth-ranked Texas 83-69 on Tuesday in Austin, Texas.
It was the first time that two Texas-based teams ranked in the top six in the Associated Press poll played in the regular season.
The Bears trailed only briefly, 47-45, five minutes into the second half before reeling off a 16-4 run and assuming a 61-51 lead. Baylor expanded its advantage to as many as 15 points after two straight layups by Butler, the last with 2:07 to play. The Bears hit 14 of their 19 shots in that decisive stretch.
The victory allowed Baylor (17-0, 9-0 Big 12) to tie the best start to a season in program history (2011-12).
MaCio Teague added 10 points for Baylor, which shot 58.6 percent and forced 17 Texas turnovers. Baylor has won every game this year by eight or more points.
Andrew Jones scored a career-high 25 points for Texas (11-4, 5-3), with Matt Coleman III hitting for 13 points, Courtney Ramey tallying 12 and Jericho Sims scoring 10 points. The Longhorns have lost three of their past four games, all at home.
The first half alternated runs, with Baylor scoring the game's first eight points before the Longhorns responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 10. Mitchell canned a 3-pointer, his fourth of the first 20 minutes, with 11 seconds left to send Baylor's lead to 41-34 at the break. He led all scorers in the half with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting.
Butler added 13 points for the Bears that included three baskets from beyond the arc as Baylor outshot the Longhorns 57 percent to 52 percent before halftime.
The Longhorns hung close thanks to Jones' 15 points in the half.
Texas scrambled to its first lead of the game, 47-45, on a steal by Coleman III that led to a runout dunk by Jones at the 16:26 mark as part of a 13-4 Longhorns run to start the second half.
