Alonzo Verge Jr. stole the spotlight from Pac-12 scoring standouts Remy Martin and Matt Bradley with 22 points off the bench Sunday afternoon, including seven important free throws down the stretch that helped Arizona State stave off host California 80-75 in Berkeley, Calif.
Martin also went for 22 points for the Sun Devils (17-8, 8-4 Pac-12), who completed a Bay Area sweep after turning back Stanford 74-69 on Thursday night. ASU, which has won five consecutive games, hadn't swept a two-game conference trip since 2010.
Bradley, whose 17.0-point scoring average in conference play was third-best to Martin's 21.3 at the start of play Sunday, matched Verge and Martin for game-high honors with 22 for the Golden Bears (10-15, 4-8), who lost their fourth straight.
In beating Cal for a fifth consecutive time, Arizona State led most of the way, including 48-39 after two free throws from Verge with 12:36 to play.
Cal made a big push, using a pair of 3-pointers from Bradley in a 10-2 burst that closed the gap to 50-49 with 10:22 to go.
Martin countered with a jumper, and even though the Golden Bears got back within one point on two occasions, the Sun Devils had all the answers when they needed them.
Verge's late binge at the line began with Arizona State leading 71-64 with 53 seconds remaining. He scored seven of his team's final nine points, all on free throws, to secure the win.
The junior finished 10-for-11 at the line.
Martin's 22 points came on 7-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-3 accuracy from 3-point range. He also found time for a game-high-tying five assists. Romello White chipped in with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Sun Devils.
Bradley's 22 points were the product of four 3-pointers and 8-for-13 shooting overall.
Grant Anticevich contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, and Paris Austin has 17 points and five assists for Cal, which was swept at home by the Arizona schools, having fallen to Arizona 68-52 on Thursday.
