Michael Devoe scored 20 points and Georgia Tech beat Clemson 65-62 in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Friday night at Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum.
The victory was the fourth in a row and sixth in seven games for the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 17-14 overall and 11-9 in the ACC by knocking off Clemson for the second time in 11 days.
It marked the first time since the 2003-04 season that Georgia Tech has posted a winning record in conference play. The Yellow Jackets can finish no worse than a tie for fifth place in the ACC standings.
Clemson (15-15, 9-11) lost for the third time in four games.
Devoe, a sophomore guard, made 7 of 13 shots from the floor, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range. Junior guard Jose Alvarado added 13 points before fouling out with 2:40 remaining while junior swingman Jordan Usher scored 11 points, all in the first half.
Clemson missed its first nine shots from the floor as the Yellow Jackets built an early lead, but back-to-back 3-point shots by Tevin Mack sparked a 9-2 Clemson run that gave the Tigers a 20-14 lead.
Georgia Tech responded by outscoring Clemson 25-8 over the remainder of the first half to lead by 11 at the break, 39-28.
The Tigers then opened the second half by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 20-5 to regain a lead that eventually swelled to nine points, 59-50, with 5:15 remaining. But the Yellow Jackets bounced back in a big way, closing the game on a 15-3 run as Devoe and center James Banks combined to score 11 of those 15 points.
Georgia Tech, which outrebounded Clemson 37-30, shot 42.9 percent from the floor while Clemson shot 35 percent.
The Tigers were led by graduate forward Mack, who had 19 points. Junior forward Aamir Simms added 12 points and graduate guard Curran Scott chipped in with 11.
