Steffon Mitchell made a tiebreaking layup with 10 seconds left in overtime as Boston College defeated Virginia Tech 77-73 on Saturday in ACC play at Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech (14-10, 5-8 ACC) took a 73-70 lead on a 3-pointer by Landers Nolley II with 2:02 remaining in overtime. Boston College (12-12, 6-7) then held Virginia Tech scoreless for the rest of the game while Mitchell broke the with his decisive hoop.

Nolley missed a 3-pointer for Virginia Tech with five seconds to go, and Boston College held on for the win.

The winning basket capped a strong outing for Mitchell, who had 21 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. Jay Heath added 18 points for the Eagles, who shot 43.4 percent from the field and were 11 of 29 from 3-point range.

Nolley carried the Hokies with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Nahiem Alleyne scored 16 points for Virginia Tech, which lost its fifth straight contest.

The Hokies shot 43.9 percent, including 8 of 26 from 3-point range.

With Boston College leading 66-64 near the end of regulation, Alleyne made two free throws with four seconds left to force overtime.

Virginia Tech had led 45-39 with 16:15 remaining in regulation. Boston College then uncorked a 12-0 run in the next 4:50 for a 51-45 advantage with 11:25 left. Heath made two 3-pointers to fuel that run. Derryck Thornton also hit a three in the Eagles' rally.

Virginia Tech then limited Boston College to just five points in the next 5:40. With 5:45 left in the game, the Hokies grabbed a 57-56 lead.

Virginia Tech started the game by scoring 31 points in just under 12 1/2 minutes. The Hokies hit 12 of their first 18 field goals. Virginia Tech built a 31-21 lead with 7:34 remaining in the first half.

Boston College then limited Virginia Tech to 3-of-11 shooting in the last 7 1/2 of the first half. The Eagles trimmed their 10-point deficit to 38-33 at halftime.

From the 7:34 mark of the first half until the 11:25 mark of the second half -- a period of roughly 16 minutes -- Virginia Tech scored only 14 points.
