Myles Powell scored 18 points as No. 16 Seton Hall never trailed and pulled away in the second half for an 81-65 victory over visiting St. John's on Sunday afternoon in Newark, N.J.
Powell scored 13 after halftime as the Pirates (20-7, 12-3 Big East) won their second straight game and reached 20 wins for a school-record fifth straight season. He added five rebounds and four assists.
Sandro Mamukelashvili, who hit the game-winning shot to beat Butler on Wednesday, added 16 points and nine rebounds. Seton Hall shot 48.2 percent and led by double digits most of the game, overcoming 17 turnovers to beat St. John's for the ninth time in the past 12 meetings.
Jared Rhoden contributed 14 and Romaro Gill collected 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks while making 6 of 6 shots from the floor.
LJ Figueroa scored 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting as St. John's (14-13, 3-11) shot a dreadful 33.8 percent. Julian Champagnie added 14 for the Red Storm, who committed 14 turnovers and shot 25 percent (5 of 20) from 3-point range.
Despite Powell missing seven of nine shots and Seton Hall committing nine turnovers and missing 11 of 15 3-point tries, the Pirates dominated the first half and held a 36-22 halftime lead. They took their first double-digit lead at 16-6 on a 3-pointer by Quincy McKnight with 12:29 left, held a pair of 17-point leads and never led by fewer than 10 points in the final 12-plus minutes of the half.
St. John's opened the second half with a 9-2 run, getting within 38-31 on a layup by Champagnie with 17:23 remaining.
Seton Hall gradually pulled away again and was never threatened after McKnight's layup made it 45-34 with 15:02 to play. The Pirates took a 68-52 lead with 5:48 remaining after Powell connected with Mamukelashvili for a dunk.
