Anthony Lawrence II and Ebuku Izundu celebrated their "senior nights" with double-doubles as Miami held off Pittsburgh 76-63 in a matchup of second-division Atlantic Coast Conference teams Tuesday night at Coral Gables, Fla.
Lawrence scored a career-high 27 points to go over 1,000 for his career and snatched 11 rebounds while Izundu had 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Hurricanes (13-16, 5-12 ACC) managed to pull away from a 1-point lead in the closing minutes.
Jared Wilson-Frame matched his season high in 3-pointers with six to lead Pitt (12-18, 2-15) with 18 points. The loss was the 13th consecutive setback for the Panthers, who are in last place in the conference.
Miami nearly doubled a 5-point halftime lead to 54-45 with just under 11 minutes left in the game, but the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to get their gap down to 54-53 with 8:28 remaining.
Izundu stopped Pitt's run with a jumper, and after the Panthers' Sidy N'Dir hit 1 of 2 free throws, Dejan Vasiljevic drilled a 3-pointer and Lawrence followed with two free throws with 6:10 remaining to give the Hurricanes some breathing room at 61-54.
Miami finished the game on a 13-3 surge.
The Hurricanes took advantage of Pitt's cold shooting and held a trio of double-digit leads, the first at 24-13 and the last at 32-22 in the first half. But the Panthers closed their halftime deficit to 36-31 on Wilson-Frame's 3-pointer with four seconds left in the period.
After missing their first five shots, the Panthers finished the period 9 of 23 from the field to Miami's 14 of 36. Miami shot 42.9 percent (27 of 63) for the game to Pitt's 43.8 (21 of 48).
Vasiljevic and Zach Johnson scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Miami. Kene Chukwuka and Xavier Johnson each chipped in 10 points for Pittsburgh.
Chris Lykes and Izundu were limited to 13 and 12 minutes, respectively, in the first half after picking up early fouls. Lykes finished the game with four personals and eight points.
