Oregon made its first 10 shots of the fourth quarter, including five 3-pointers, as it rallied for a 99-86 win Tuesday night over Rider in the first round of the NIT at Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.
Payton Pritchard and reserve Victor Bailey each scored 23 points for the third-seeded Ducks (23-12), which will meet either Marquette or Harvard in the second round. The Golden Eagles and Crimson play their first-round game Wednesday night in Milwaukee.
Elijah Brown added 18 for Oregon, while Kenny Wooten chipped in a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Ducks canned 76.9 percent of their field goals in the second half and finished at 58.9 percent for the game, including an impressive 14 of 26 from behind the 3-point arc.
The Broncs (22-10) played well enough to beat many teams for three quarters before being overwhelmed by Oregon's 38-point fourth quarter. They put five players in double figures, led by Dimencio Vaughn's game-high 25 points.
Tyere Marshall contributed 18, while Jordan Allen added 17 points. Frederick Scott came off the bench to score 16 and Stevie Jordan netted 10 points before fouling out.
Rider riddled Oregon in the first half, attacking the basket and making nearly 56 percent of its field-goal tries. The regular season champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference jumped out to a 21-15 lead after one quarter, thanks to a layup by Vaughn with 32 seconds left.
The Broncs kept the pressure on the Ducks in the second quarter, opening up a 28-18 lead at the 5:47 mark when Jordan converted a layup. Pritchard drew Oregon within three just before the half, but a Vaughn layup with 26 seconds remaining sent Rider to the locker room with a 44-36 advantage.
To start the third quarter, the Broncs established their biggest lead at 51-39 when Jordan made a layup with 8:02 remaining. But the Ducks made their move, scoring 11 straight points and taking their first lead since the first quarter at the 2:24 mark on a Pritchard layup.
A three-point play by Scott helped Rider carry a 65-61 edge to the fourth quarter.
