No. 8 Louisville 82, Temple 58: Montrezl Harrell scored a career-high 22 points as the Cardinals sent the host Owls to their fourth straight loss in a game delayed a day due to the winter storm pounding the mid-Atlantic.
Harrell shot 9-of-16 from the field, grabbed 10 rebounds and added four blocks while Russ Smith poured in 15 points for Louisville (20-4, 9-2 AAC), which shot 51.6 percent from the field – including 62.5 percent in the first half – and showed little rust following an eight-day layoff. Wayne Blackshear tallied 13 points and Luke Hancock had 11 as the Cardinals have won three in a row by an average of 18.7 points.
Will Cummings finished with 16 points to pace Temple (6-17, 1-10), which fell back into a last-place tie with Central Florida and is two losses away from tying the single-season school record. Anthony Lee contributed 14 points and was the only other Owl to score in double figures.
Louisville scored the first five points of the game and never trailed, getting eight of Harrell’s 15 first-half points in the first 7 ½ minutes to race out to a double-digit lead it would not relinquish. After a basket by Cummings cut Temple’s deficit to 30-18 with 6:48 left in the first half, the Cardinals hit four 3-pointers during a 17-2 surge over the next five-plus minutes to pull away.
Anton Gill’s 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the first half stretched the lead to 52-22 and the Owls could get no closer than 21 points thereafter. Harrell’s sixth dunk and Smith’s three-point play midway through the second half stretched the margin to 76-40 before the Owls used a late 18-3 run against the Cardinals’ reserves to make the final score more respectable.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Six of Harrell’s nine field goals were dunks, giving him 58 for the season – one shy of the single-season school record. … The Cardinals went 11-of-24 from the foul line, but the Owls returned the favor by shooting 37.3 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from the 3-point line. … Louisville broke Temple’s four-game winning streak in this series, securing its first win since the schools first met on Dec. 13, 1952.
