Oklahoma 68, Texas-El Paso 61: Romero Osby recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds and the Sooners held off a late rally by the Miners in the first round of the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Texas-El Paso trimmed a 20-point deficit to 64-60 with less than two minutes left before Steven Pledger’s 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining sealed it for Oklahoma (3-0). The Sooners will play No. 16 Gonzaga in Friday's semifinals.
Pledger finished with 12 points and Andrew Fitzgerald chipped in with nine for the Sooners, who scored the first 15 points of the game. Osby also had four assists.
Chris Washburn scored 12 points while Jacques Streeter and Julian Washburn added 11 apiece for the Miners (1-2), who used triangle-and-two and box-and-one defenses to climb back in the game.
Oklahoma played suffocating defense and dominated on the boards to lead by as much 16 early in the game before the Miners crept within five. Oklahoma, which got 10 first-half points from Osby, responded and took a 38-26 lead into halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Nine different players had points in the first half for Oklahoma and 10 scored overall. … Oklahoma is 3-1 all-time against Texas-El Paso. … The Miners, who will play Clemson in the consolation round Friday, held Oklahoma to 8-of-28 from the field in the second half.
