Wesley Witherspoon scored 20 points and Chris Crawford hit some clutch 3-pointers as Memphis held off LSU, 70-61, in a back-and-forth affair Sunday in Tupelo, Miss. as part of the Global Sports Challenge.
Down for most of the second half, LSU (2-2) took a 57-56 lead on a layup by Andre Stringer with 4:48 remaining. Memphis tied it with a free throw seconds later and then reclaimed the upper hand for good on a 3-pointer by Crawford at the 3:53 mark. Another Crawford shot from the arc with 1:02 left made it an eight-point game.
LSU led by as many as nine in the first half, eventually heading into the break with a 34-33 advantage, but Memphis (4-0) opened the second half with a Crawford 3-pointer and didn’t trail again until Stringer gave LSU a brief one-point cushion before the final Memphis charge.
Crawford and Joe Jackson each finished with 12 points for Memphis.
Stringer had 13 points for LSU, which shot just 25 percent (6-of-24) in the second half. Aaron Dotson and Ralston Turner added 12 and 11, respectively.
