Freshman guard Joe Jackson's 17 points and two clutch free throws lifted 19th-ranked Memphis to a hard-earned 72-68 non-conference home victory over Miami on a game played early Tuesday morning.

Charles Carmouche added 13 points and five steals for the Tigers, who used an early 10-2 run in the second half to take a 48-39 lead.

Jackson's two free throws helped extend the Tigers' lead to 69-66 in the final minute of the game. Miami's Malcolm Grant missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds as the Tigers avoided the upset bid.

It was an ugly game marred by 58 fouls (29 apiece) that saw the teams shoot a total of 75 free throws. Ultimately, the Tigers 30-of-39 performance from the foul line proved the difference as the Hurricanes (1-1) shot 25-of-36 from the stripe.

The Hurricanes (1-1) battled back and even held a 63-59 lead after Grant's 3-pointer with 3:58 left in the game. But the Tigers made their free throws late and survived as Adrian Thomas also missed a 3-pointer in the final minute that could have gave the Hurricanes the lead.

Durand Scott led Miami with 20 points, followed by 18 from Grant.

Up next for the Tigers is a Wednesday home game against Northwestern State (1-1), while the Hurricanes will host N.C. Central (1-1) on Friday.
