GRIZZLIES 94, MAVERICKS 89: Rudy Gay scored 25 points to lead Memphis over visiting Dallas.
Zach Randolph had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Gilbert Arenas scored 14 points as the Grizzlies won for the fifth time in six games.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 17 points and Brandan Wright added a season-high 16 points for the Mavericks, who lost their second consecutive contest.
Memphis never trailed and jumped out to a 20-point first-quarter lead while avenging a road loss to Dallas on April 4.
The Mavericks battled back to within 63-62 on Vince Carter’s 3-pointer with 4:15 left in the third quarter but were unable to grab the lead.
The Grizzlies boosted their advantage to 88-78 with 6:46 to play before Dallas made another run. The Mavericks cut their deficit to 92-89 on two free throws by Nowitzki with 21.5 seconds remaining before Randolph hit two free throws with 15.8 seconds left. Marc Gasol stole the ensuing inbounds pass and Dallas elected not to foul as the clock ran out.
Mike Conley added 12 points for the Grizzlies.
Carter scored 14 points for Dallas, which received 12 points and 11 rebounds from Shawn Marion and 12 points and eight assists from Jason Terry.
Memphis scored the first eight points and led 26-6 after Gay’s dunk with 1:05 left in the first opening. Dallas was just 2 of 15 from the field in the quarter and trailed 29-10. The Grizzlies led 50-39 at halftime.
Nowitzki was 1 of 7 shooting in the first half and finished 5 of 16.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gay averaged just 13 points over the previous five games before hitting 9 of 15 shots against the Mavericks. … Dallas’ 10-point opening quarter matched the season low established in the third quarter of Friday’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. … Memphis guard Tony Allen (cut mouth) missed his second straight game … Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd (groin) sat out his fourth consecutive contest.
