J.D. Davis' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning Saturday night capped another comeback win for the scorching New York Mets, who beat the visiting Washington Nationals, 3-2.

The Mets have won eight straight games and 15 of their past 16 dating back to July 25 to move within a half-game of the Nationals, who lead the NL wild-card race. New York was eight games back of the second wild card spot following the games of July 24.

The Nationals have lost six of 10.

Juan Soto's second homer of the game in the eighth inning gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead, but Mets pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme led off the bottom half with his first career homer, a blast to right off Fernando Rodney (0-5).

Joe Panik then reached on a throwing error by shortstop Trea Turner, after which Jeff McNeil chased Rodney with a single. Both runners advanced a base on a groundout by Amed Rosario. After Pete Alonso was intentionally walked, Davis, who homered in the fourth, flew out to deep right to score Panik.

Seth Lugo (5-2) tossed the final two innings to earn the win for the Mets.

The Nationals took a quick lead in the first, when Adam Eaton walked with one out, stole second and scored on Soto's two-run homer.

The Mets mounted a familiar rally to tie the game in the fourth, when Davis and Wilson Ramos hit back-to-back homers in a three-pitch span. New York was losing 3-0 in the fourth inning Friday when Alonso (two-run homer) and Davis hit back-to-back homers to tie the game.

Soto briefly gave the Nationals the lead again in the eighth, when he homered off Lugo to end the reliever's streak of 26 consecutive batters retired dating back to July 21. It was also the first hit off Lugo since July 16, a span of 34 batters.

Mets starter Noah Syndergaard allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over seven innings. Nationals starter Patrick Corbin gave up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings.
