Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun hit home runs and also threw out runners at the plate as the visiting Los Angeles Angels remained perfect against the crosstown Los Angeles Dodgers by holding on for a 5-4 victory on Tuesday.
Calhoun threw out Cody Bellinger at the plate for the final out of the game after Enrique Hernandez's single. Trout cut down Max Muncy at the plate in the second inning on a throw that was clocked at 98.6 mph, and he also hit a home run estimated at 454 feet into the second deck down the left field line in the fifth inning.
The Angels improved to 3-0 against the Dodgers this season and will go for a sweep of the interleague season series Wednesday.
Corey Seager had two hits for the Dodgers and drove in a run, but missed out on a second RBI on Trout's throw home. The Dodgers got a sacrifice fly from Muncy in the ninth before Calhoun's throw nailed Bellinger.
The loss left the Dodgers 7-4 since the All-Star break.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Shohei Ohtani delivered a pinch-hit RBI single off countryman Kenta Maeda. Earlier this season, Ohtani hit a home run off Maeda in the battle of Japan natives.
The Dodgers tied the score 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Seager in the fourth inning, but Trout got the lead back with his homer down the left field line in the fifth inning, his 33rd of the season and second against the Dodgers.
The Angels added two more runs in the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead on an RBI double by Calhoun and an RBI ground out by Albert Pujols.
The Dodgers pulled within 4-3 in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Russell Martin and Joc Pederson, but Calhoun got one of the runs back with a home run deep into the right field seats, his 22nd, to lead off the seventh.
Right-hander Felix Pena (8-3) followed opener Taylor Cole and gave up one run over 3 2/3 innings despite pitching with a small laceration on the back of his right thumb. Hansel Robles pitched the ninth inning to earn his 15th save.
Maeda (7-7) gave up three runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings with two walks and seven strikeouts in his return to the rotation, after he was used for one inning out of the bullpen Friday.
