Cole Tucker hit a go-ahead two-run home run in his major league debut and the Pittsburgh Pirates extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory Saturday over the visiting San Francisco Giants in a game that was shortened to five innings because of rain.
The game was called after a 3-hour, 8-minute delay.
In just his third at-bat in the big leagues, Tucker crushed a 2-2 pitch against Giants left-hander Derek Holland onto the grass berm beyond the center field wall. The blast, into a stiff breeze, came in the bottom of the fifth, minutes before the infield was covered because of an arriving rainstorm.
The Giants' Steven Duggar had tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single against Pirates starter Jameson Taillon. San Francisco lost its fourth consecutive game and fell for the fifth time in its past six contests.
Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds, who was also making his major league debut Saturday, delivered his first career hit in the fourth inning with a single to left field.
Tucker and Reynolds were called up earlier Saturday after Starling Marte and Erik Gonzalez were placed on the injured list following their collision in short center field Friday.
Taillon (1-2) gave up one run on four hits over five innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. He has given up one earned run or fewer three times in his last four starts.
Holland (1-3) gave up three runs on four hits over his five innings, with a walk and seven strikeouts. He also gave up a home run to Jung Ho Kang in the fourth inning, Kang's third of the season.
The Giants still have not scored a run in the first inning this season, the only major league team that has gone scoreless in the opening inning this season. They are 6-for-69 (.087) in the first inning this year.
