Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton walked with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to drive in the winning run and Scooter Gennett had two hits as the Reds won a thriller in walkoff fashion, 5-4, over the Chicago Cubs in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at the Great American Ball Park on Saturday.
Scott Schebler walked to open the last of the 11th inning against Justin Wilson (1-1) before Tucker Barnhart singled and Adam Duvall walked to load the bases. Schebler trotted home on Hamilton's walk as his teammates emerged from the dugout to celebrate.
Eugenio Suarez had two RBIs and Jose Peraza scored twice for the Reds, who had lost three of four.
Ian Happ had three hits and scored two times for the Cubs, who had won two of three. Happ was a single short of the cycle in a game played in off-and-on rain.
Kris Bryant had three hits and an RBI and Albert Almora Jr. had two hits for the Cubs.
The benches emptied after Amir Garrett celebrated a strike out of Javier Baez to end the seventh inning. The two stared at each other as players came to the field. No punches were thrown and nobody was ejected.
Dylan Floro (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.
Happ homered to lead off a two-run eighth inning to tie the game at 4 off Raisel Iglesias. Pinch hitter Tommy La Stella followed with a single, and Anthony Rizzo hit a two-out double to drive in La Stella from first base. Iglesias suffered his second blown save.
Cincinnati right-hander Luis Castillo gave up six hits and one run in five innings, with four strikeouts and five walks.
Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks gave up six hits and four runs (three earned) in five innings, with six strikeouts and two walks.
The Cubs were 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Peraza walked with one out, stole second and scored on Gennett's two-out single for a 1-0 lead in the first.
Almora singled to open the third inning and scored on Bryant's double to tie the game at 1.
Joey Votto doubled to open the fourth inning, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Suarez's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.
Happ tripled and scored on Hendricks' double to tie it at 2 in the sixth inning.
Peraza reached on shortstop Addison Russell's fielding error to open a two-run sixth for a 4-2 lead. Votto walked and Gennett singled in Peraza. Suarez doubled to drive in the second run of the inning.
