Tigers 10, Twins 6: Nick Castellanos homered and had three RBIs and Torii Hunter added three hits and two RBIs as visiting Detroit routed Minnesota.
Rick Porcello (3-1) allowed four runs and six hits in five-plus innings as the Tigers took the opener of the three-game series. Rajai Davis went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Miguel Cabrera recorded his seventh RBI in a four-game span as Detroit pounded out 15 hits.
The Tigers broke the game open with a seven-run third inning as Twins starter Kevin Correia (0-3) was charged with eight runs (seven earned) and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings. Joba Chamberlain recorded two outs to thwart a Minnesota threat in the eighth and Joe Nathan finished up in a non-save situation.
Castellanos hit a two-run homer to right in the second to get Detroit started and Minnesota got one back in the bottom of the inning on Kurt Suzuki’s sacrifice fly. Victor Martinez got the third-inning uprising going with a run-scoring single and Castellanos followed with one of his own to make it 4-1.
Andrew Romine drew a bases-loaded walk to end Correia’s night and Davis and Ian Kinsler added run-scoring singles off Anthony Swarzak before Hunter stroked a two-run single to make it 9-1. Cabrera added a run-scoring single in the sixth and Minnesota scored four in the bottom of the inning on Brian Dozier’s homer, Chris Colabello’s single, Jason Kubel’s double and another sacrifice fly by Suzuki before moving within 10-6 on Trevor Plouffe’s RBI double in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kubel went 3-for-4 for his first multi-hit outing since having four hits against Oakland on April 9. … Tigers C Alex Avila departed with a shin contusion in the fifth inning. … Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Rochester.
