Astros 5, Diamondbacks 4 (10): Chris Carter blasted a lead-off home run in the 10th inning after Arizona's Miguel Montero’s solo homer tied the game in the ninth and Houston completed a sweep of the brief two-game set against visiting the Diamondbacks.
Carter, who had two solo homers in Wednesday’s contest, gave the Astros their first walk-off victory of the season by depositing a 2-2 offering from J.J. Putz (1-1) deep into the left-field seats. Carlos Corporan went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Tony Sipp (1-0) worked a scoreless 10th inning for Houston, which has won 14 of its last 19 games.
Jon Singleton homered and drove in two runs while Jose Altuve contributed two hits before leaving in the seventh after being hit on his right hand by a pitch from Randall Delgado. Arizona forced extra innings when Montero homered on the first pitch from closer Chad Qualls in the ninth, ending Qualls’ 19-game scoreless streak.
Singleton put the Astros ahead 2-1 in the third with a one-out solo homer off Wade Miley, who yielded four runs while striking out eight over five frames. Houston extended its lead in the fourth on Corporan’s two-run blast after Robbie Grossman drew a leadoff walk.
Didi Gregorius scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-2 and Arizona moved closer on Chris Owings’ solo homer in the seventh. Paul Goldschmidt doubled with one out in the eighth, but George Springer made a diving catch on Martin Prado’s fly ball to shallow right field and doubled up Goldschmidt to end the inning.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona claimed C Jordan Pacheco off waivers from Colorado and designated 1B Nick Evans for assignment. … Houston CF Dexter Fowler went 3-for-5 and starter Scott Feldman allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings. … Arizona fell to 4-2 in extra-inning games while Houston evened its record at 3-3.
