Diamondbacks 4, Padres 3: Brandon McCarthy snapped an eight-game winless streak with seven scoreless innings while Miguel Montero went 3-for-5 with a homer as visiting Arizona held off a late charge from San Diego for its third straight victory.
Chris Owings had three hits and scored a run while Alfredo Marte, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Friday, finished with a pair of run-scoring hits for the Diamondbacks. McCarthy (1-5) was dominant for the second straight outing, yielding only three hits and a walk while fanning six after recording a career-high 12 strikeouts in a hard-luck loss to the Philadelphia Phillies last weekend.
Yasmani Grandal’s one-out RBI double in the ninth inning off J.J. Putz ended Arizona’s bid for a second straight shutout before closer Addison Reed gave up Jedd Gyorko’s two-run blast two pitches later and Cameron Maybin’s two-out double before settling down for his eighth save. Ian Kennedy (2-4) struck out seven but surrendered three runs on a season-high 11 hits over five frames.
After Kennedy induced a double-play grounder to get out of the opening inning, Montero led off the second with his second home run in three contests as he belted a low 1-2 changeup over the fence in right-center field. Owings doubled two batters later and Marte quickly plated him with a double down the right-field line for his first hit of the season.
Owings capped a stretch of three straight one-out singles to add another run in the fifth, the last three hits Kennedy allowed during his 102-pitch outing. The Diamondbacks put runners on the corners with two outs and added a much-needed insurance run in the seventh against reliever Donn Roach as San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera could not get in front of Marte’s slow roller, allowing Aaron Hill to score easily from third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego’s three-run ninth helped the team avoid its third shutout in four games. ... Kennedy, who is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three road starts, fell to 0-4 with a 5.08 ERA in four home outings. … Marte also was credited with his first assist on an odd double play in the third, when he tracked down a fly ball off the bat of Jace Peterson near the warning track in left-center. Maybin, who drew a walk to lead off the inning, rounded second base and was standing at third before realizing Marte caught the ball.
