Rays 8, Padres 7: Evan Longoria belted a two-run, two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as Tampa Bay rallied past San Diego for its fourth straight victory.
Ben Zobrist walked with two outs and Longoria hammered a pitch by closer Huston Street (0-2) over the left-center field wall to set a franchise record with his fifth walk-off home run. James Loney also hit a two-run homer and Cesar Ramos (1-0) did not allow a hit over 2 1/3 innings to get the victory.
Jesus Guzman belted a pinch-hit grand slam and Carlos Quentin followed with a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning as San Diego took a 7-6 lead. Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson retired 16 straight batters before a walk and two singles loaded the bases for Guzman’s first slam on a 3-2 changeup.
Chase Headley drilled a two-run homer as the Padres took a 2-0 lead in the first inning for the second straight night. But San Diego starter Burch Smith, making his major-league debut, retired only three batters and was touched up for six runs on five hits and two walks.
Smith struck out two in a perfect first inning, but allowed the first seven batters to reach in the second before leaving. Loney hammered a two-run homer to tie the game before Yunel Escobar added a two-run single, Matt Joyce delivered an RBI double and Kelly Johnson hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead.
