Cardinals 3, Phillies 1: Jon Jay had an RBI triple to highlight a three-run third inning and Lance Lynn tossed seven solid frames as St. Louis completed its first three-game home sweep of Philadelphia since 2001.
Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams ripped run-scoring singles for the National League Central-leading Cardinals, who have won 12 of their last 15 contests to extend their advantage over Pittsburgh to 2 1/2 games.
Carpenter opened the scoring after he deposited a 1-1 changeup from Kyle Kendrick (9-7) into right field to plate Pete Kozma. The speedy Jay brought Carpenter home by lining a shot to the right-center field gap before scoring St. Louis' third run on Adams' single.
Lynn (12-5) worked around Erik Kratz's RBI single in the fourth inning to send struggling Philadelphia to its fifth straight setback. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits and struck out six before Trevor Rosenthal bridged the gap to Edward Mujica, who retired the side in the ninth for his 30th save.
Kendrick saw his modest two-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 5-2 in his career versus the Cardinals. The right-hander yielded three runs on five hits in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia OF Domonic Brown was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion. OF Steve Susdorf was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and LHP Jeremy Horst was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. ...
