Twins 3, Phillies 2: Justin Morneau singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth and finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs as Minnesota took the opener of a three-game series from visiting Philadelphia.
After the Phillies tied it up in the top of the eighth, the Twins put the first two runners on against Mike Adams (1-4) but could not get the go-ahead run in until Morneau sent a two-out single up the middle off Antonio Bastardo. Brian Duensing (1-1) ended up with the win in relief and Glen Perkins worked a perfect ninth for his 14th save.
Ryan Howard drove in the tying run and Michael Young contributed an RBI single for Philadelphia, which has dropped four straight.
The Phillies grabbed the lead on Young’s single to right in the third but Minnesota broke through against Cole Hamels in the fourth. Josh Willingham, Morneau and Oswaldo Arcia hit consecutive doubles with one out to give the Twins a 2-1 edge.
That held until the eighth, when a pair of singles ended the night for Minnesota starter P.J. Walters. The left-handed Duensing came on and struck out Jimmy Rollins but could not get Howard, who pulled an outside slider through the right side to plate the tying run.
GAME NOTEBOOK: CF Ben Revere, who was traded to Philadelphia from Minnesota in the off-season, went 1-for-4 in his first game against his former team. … Walters was charged with two runs (one earned) on six hits in 7 1/3 innings while Hamels went six, surrendering two runs on seven hits. … Philadelphia C Erik Kratz will have surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
