Brewers 5, Pirates 1: Norichika Aoki had three hits and three RBIs and Marco Estrada tossed seven strong innings as visiting Milwaukee won the opener of the four-game series.
Jean Segura added three hits and three stolen bases for the Brewers, who snapped a four-game losing streak and won for the second time in their last 11 games. Estrada (3-2) allowed one run on three hits while striking out five.
Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the fifth when Aoki doubled in a run and stole third before scoring on Segura’s infield single off A.J. Burnett (3-4), who allowed four runs (three earned) over seven frames. The Brewers recorded a season-high six stolen bases, including two by Aoki.
Clint Barmes had two hits for Pittsburgh, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. The Pirates scored in the seventh when Gaby Sanchez led off with a double and scored on Pedro Alvarez’s groundout.
The Brewers added to their lead in the ninth when Alex Gonzalez scored on Aoki’s infield single off Tony Watson. Pittsburgh committed three errors and fell to 12-24 against the Brewers at PNC Park since 2008.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Brewers LF Ryan Braun missed the game with a stiff neck and is listed as day-to-day. ... In the five starts the Pirates have lost with Burnett on the mound, they have scored a total of five runs. … Milwaukee 2B Rickie Weeks was held out of the starting lineup for the first time this season in favor of Yuniesky Betancourt, who went 0-for-4.
