Marlins 3, Tigers 2: Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run double in the third inning to power host Miami in the opener of a three-game series.
Tom Koehler (5-10) allowed two runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings and two relievers bridged the gap to Steve Cishek, who worked a scoreless ninth for his 34th save. Cishek has converted 29 consecutive save opportunities.
Jose Alvarez (1-5) was charged with three runs in 2 2/3 innings for the Tigers, who will be the No. 3 seed in the American League playoffs. Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-3 in his return to Miami before being lifted for a pinch runner, and the former Marlins star received a standing ovation before his first at-bat.
The Marlins loaded the bases in the third to chase Alvarez, and Stanton greeted Rick Porcello with a double down the left-field line to clear the bases.
Austin Jackson singled home a run in the fifth to get the Tigers on the board, and Jhonny Peralta - playing left field in his return from a 50-game suspension related to performance-enhancing drugs - added an RBI double in the sixth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Marlins on Friday fired president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest and special assistant Jim Fleming. Beinfest had headed the personnel department since 2002. … Peralta played left field for the first time in his career and Porcello made his second career relief appearance, both in preparation for new roles in the postseason. … The Marlins won for the first time this season with the roof open at Marlins Park, improving to 1-13.
