Brewers 5, Cubs 3: Johnny Hellweg pitched six strong innings for his first major-league win and Logan Schafer laced a three-run triple as visiting Milwaukee evened the series and moved back into fourth place in the National League Central.
Hellweg (1-3) allowed three runs on four hits with all the damage coming on a pair of home runs to pick up his first win in his fourth big-league start. Rob Wooten and Brandon Kintzler each worked scoreless frames to get the ball to Jim Henderson, who worked a perfect ninth for his 23rd save.
Chicago starter Jake Arrieta (2-2) allowed four runs on three hits over five innings. Luis Valbuena and Brian Bogusevic homered for the Cubs, who dropped back into the division cellar - one game behind Milwaukee.
Valbuena staked the Cubs to a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot to right in the second, but the Brewers answered with four in the fourth. Scooter Gennett singled home a run to cut the deficit in half, and Schafer cleared the bases with a liner into the gap in right-center.
The Cubs trimmed it to 4-3 on Bogusevic's solo shot in the sixth, but Jonathan Lucroy tripled home Norichika Aoki with an insurance run in the ninth as Milwaukee took a 9-5 lead in the season series.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Milwaukee improved to 24-22 in the second game of a series but is 37-58 in all other contests. … RHP Chang-Yong Lim became the 54th player to appear for the Cubs this season, breaking last year's franchise mark of 53. … The Brewers improved to 52-1 when leading after eight innings.
