Cubs 7, Diamondbacks 2: Scott Hairston hit a grand slam and Alfonso Soriano and Cody Ransom also went deep to power host Chicago to its season-high fifth consecutive win.
The offensive outburst backed right-hander Matt Garza (1-0), who held Arizona to two runs on six hits over seven innings with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field. James Russell and Carlos Villanueva each worked a scoreless inning to finish it off.
Soriano's two-run blast gave the Cubs a first-inning lead, and Chicago broke it open with five runs in the third. Soriano was intentionally walked to load the bases ahead of Hairston's third career grand slam, and Ransom followed with a solo shot later in the inning.
All three homers came against Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley (3-5), who was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in seven innings. Miley has lost four straight starts and five of his last six.
Gerardo Parra and Miguel Montero each had two hits for the Diamondbacks. No player had multiple hits for the Cubs, who have scored seven or more runs in four straight games after doing so only six times in their first 49 contests.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs have hit grand slams in consecutive games for the first time since Sammy Sosa did so at Arizona on July 27-28, 1998. … Garza has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 19 consecutive home starts dating to June 27, 2011. … The Diamondbacks placed 3B Eric Chavez (strained oblique) on the 15-day disabled list Friday and activated Willie Bloomquist from the DL.
