Diamondbacks 6, Yankees 2 (12): Cody Ross pushed across the go-ahead run and Eric Chavez added a three-run double in the 12th as Arizona outlasted host New York to avoid a sweep in the three-game series.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases on a double, catcher’s interference and a hit batter with one out in the 12th before Ross slapped a single to left off David Phelps (0-1). Chavez followed and drove a double to the center-field wall to clear the bases.

Heath Bell (1-0) worked a scoreless 11th to earn the win after Patrick Corbin had his seven-inning, two-hit performance undone by the bullpen. Rookie Didi Gregorius and Martin Prado each added solo homers for Arizona.

J.J. Putz came on for the save nursing a 2-1 lead in the ninth and left a fastball up to Francisco Cervelli, who lined it into the front row in left to send the game to extra innings.

Gregorius was making his first start of the season and connected on his first swing, taking a fastball from Yankees starter Phil Hughes into the third row in right field to put Arizona on top in the third. Prado made it 2-0 when he lined a 1-1 fastball into the stands in left in the sixth, and Robinson Cano cut it back to a one-run deficit with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

GAME NOTEBOOK: New York got some bad news about SS Derek Jeter when a CT scan of his injured left ankle revealed a new fracture. Jeter is now expected to be out until after the All-Star break. … Gregorius, who was acquired in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds over the winter, was called up earlier in the week when 2B Aaron Hill went on the DL. Gregorius did not record an extra-base hit in a brief call-up with the Reds last September. … Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-5 and has reached base safely in all 15 games.
