Pirates 6, Diamondbacks 5: Starling Marte, Neil Walker and Garrett Jones drove in two runs apiece as visiting Pittsburgh beat Arizona for the second straight game.
Jones had three hits, Marte tallied two hits and scored twice while Travis Snider contributed two hits for the Pirates, who took the lead with a five-run fourth inning off Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy (0-1). McCarthy allowed 10 hits and six runs – four earned – while throwing 115 pitches in 6 2/3 innings.
Jason Kubel hit a two-run home run for the Diamondbacks, but they struggled to string to together base hits off Pittsburgh starter James McDonald (1-1) and four relievers. McDonald allowed four runs on four hits over five frames, striking out five and walking four.
Marte led off the game with a single, stole second and took third on a fly ball that was caught in foul territory in right field. Jones also beat out an infield single to shortstop, scoring Marte for a 1-0 lead.
Arizona came back with four runs in the bottom of the first. Miguel Montero knocked in Gerardo Parra and Aaron Hill with a one-out double and scored on Kubel’s two-run homer. Pittsburgh erupted with its five-run inning as Marte came through with a two-run double, Walker singled in two runs and Jones followed with a run-scoring single to right.
GAME NOTEBOOK: OF Andrew Lambo, who was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Pirates along with McDonald in July 2010, hit for the cycle in five innings while playing for Double-A Altoona earlier Tuesday. … After scoring eight runs in the first six games, the Pirates have scored 11 in the last two. … Marte has singled to lead off the last four games.
