Athletics 9, Rangers 3: Derek Norris drove in three runs and Stephen Drew had four hits and two RBIs as visiting Oakland pulled within three games of Texas in the American League West.
Norris’ RBI triple with two outs in the first finished the night for Rangers starter Martin Perez (1-3) and capped a five-run inning for the Athletics, who remained two games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the AL’s second wild card. The Angels pulled out a 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners.
Jarrod Parker (12-8) struck out eight in six innings for his fifth win in six decisions. Parker allowed three runs and five hits.
Elvis Andrus had two RBIs for Texas, including a second-inning sacrifice fly that cut Oakland’s lead to 5-3. Drew delivered a two-run single in the top of the third, while Norris added a run-scoring base hit in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Oakland had 16 hits, but Chris Carter’s second-inning strikeout was the Athletics’ 1,325th of the season to eclipse the American League record set by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. The Athletics fanned 11 times to end the contest with 1,333 strikeouts.
