Dodgers 5, Pirates 4: Shane Victorino hit his first home run since joining the Dodgers and Aaron Harang threw six strong innings to help Los Angeles take the opener of a key four-game series at Pittsburgh.
Harang (8-7) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four to snap a two-start losing streak. He was unable to hold an early 2-0 lead, giving up a two-run double to Garrett Jones in the third, but Victorino's two-run blast to right in the fifth gave the Dodgers the lead for good.
Pirates starter Jeff Karstens (4-3) did a nice job with everyone but Victorino, giving up four runs on seven hits over seven innings. The loss was his first since June 25; he had won four consecutive decisions.
Kenley Jansen needed just seven pitches to work a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 30 chances.
Jones went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs and scored the other for the Pirates, who lost for just the 11th time in their last 36 home games.
Victorino opened the scoring with an RBI double in the third, and Matt Kemp added a run-scoring single later in the inning. Juan Rivera drove in Los Angeles' final run with a bases-loaded single in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Victorino has hit safely in nine of 11 games since being acquired from Philadelphia and is riding a seven-game hitting streak. … Kemp went 2-for-4 and has recorded multiple hits in 26 of the 64 games he has played this season. … Jones has recorded four or more hits five times in his career, including twice this season. His career high of five hits came in 2010 against the Cubs. … The Dodgers placed INF Jerry Hairston Jr. (left hip) on the disabled list and recalled Elian Herrera.
