Astros 5, Reds 3: Pinch hitter Justin Maxwell belted a two-run homer and Jordan Lyles pitched a season-high seven innings as Houston avoided a three-game sweep and halted its eight-game losing streak.
Jason Castro and Marwin Gonzalez each recorded two hits and an RBI for the Astros, who won for the first time since May 25 at Los Angeles.
Gonzalez forged a tie with an RBI single in the fifth and Jordan Schafer gave Houston a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly two batters later. After Gonzalez singled with one out in the seventh, Maxwell hit his fourth blast of the year to extend the advantage.
Lyles (1-1) held Cincinnati to two runs and five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The 21-year-old right-hander has posted two of his three major-league victories against the Reds.
Brett Myers worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 14 opportunities.
Bronson Arroyo (2-4) surrendered five runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. The veteran fell to 0-3 in his last five outings.
Zack Cozart hit a two-run homer for the Reds, who had won three of four.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Astros placed slugger Carlos Lee on the 15-day disabled list before Sunday's game and recalled Brett Wallace from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Lee suffered a strained left hamstring in Friday's loss. ... Arroyo has allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts.
