Pirates 5, Cubs 0: A.J. Burnett pitched 7 2/3 no-hit innings before settling for a one-hit shutout and Neil Walker matched his career high with five RBIs as visiting Pittsburgh defeated Chicago.
Burnett was four outs away from his second career no-hitter when Adrian Cardenas lined a clean single to right field to break up the bid. Burnett recorded the final four outs to conclude the 10th shutout of his career.
Burnett (13-3) struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter while winning for the 12th time in 13 decisions. He improved to 6-0 in seven career starts against the Cubs.
Walker hit a first-inning grand slam and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Cardenas was called up from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day and sharply smacked a 3-2 pitch for the hit that continues the Cubs’ streak of 47 years without being no-hit. Chicago was last no-hit in 1965 when Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers hurled a perfect game.
Casey Coleman (0-2) drew the start after Chicago traded scheduled starter Ryan Dempster to the Texas Rangers earlier Tuesday.
The Pirates loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before Walker hit a towering shot to right for his second career grand slam.
Dempster was traded to the Rangers just prior to Tuesday’s trading deadline for two minor-leaguers – third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks.
Coleman was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to make the start and gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh made two trades prior to the deadline. The club sent 3B Casey McGehee to the New York Yankees for reliever Chad Qualls and acquired 1B Gaby Sanchez and minor-league reliever Kyle Kaminska for outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez and Pittsburgh’s sandwich pick between the first and second round of the 2013 draft. … In addition to Coleman and Cardenas, the Cubs recalled C Wellington Castillo from Triple-A Iowa. The reinforcements were necessary after Chicago dealt LHP Paul Maholm and OF Reed Johnson to the Atlanta Braves and C Geovany Soto to the Rangers. … The switch-hitting Walker has 11 homers this season, all while batting left-handed. … Cubs 2B Darwin Barney left the game after being beaned in the head by Burnett in the eighth. … OF Travis Snider went 1-for-4 in his Pirates debut after being acquired from Toronto on Monday.
