The Tampa Bay Rays overcame a five-run deficit on Thursday to avoid their first four-game sweep in Oakland with a 10-8 triumph over the Athletics.
Desmond Jennings belted his first homer - a two-run shot in the sixth inning - and his two-run single in the seventh put the Rays ahead for good. Tampa Bay sent 10 batters to the plate in the seven-run seventh, capped by Evan Longoria’s 14th homer of the season.
The best-hitting team in the majors since the All-Star break, the Athletics hit for the cycle in the first inning as David DeJesus ripped a two-run triple and Conor Jackson had a two-run homer.
But the bullpen faltered behind starter Rich Harden, and the Athletics lost for the second time in six games.
Tampa Bay won for just the second time in seven tries. Center fielder B.J. Upton, who had been in a 3-for-38 slump, returned to the lineup after a day off and hit his 16th homer of the season.
