Scott Sizemore hit a three-run double in the ninth inning as the Oakland Athletics halted a 10-game losing streak Friday night with a 7-5 win over the host Chicago White Sox.
Sizemore capped Oakland's four-run rally with the go-ahead two-base hit to center field off Sergio Santos (2-3). The White Sox closer has now surrendered seven runs over his past two outings after allowing just four runs over his previous 29 innings.
Sizemore's heroics made a winner out of Grant Balfour (4-1), who worked a scoreless eighth inning. Andrew Bailey tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Friday's triumph was the first for interim manager Bob Melvin, who improved to 1-1 since taking over for the departed Bob Geren. It also ended Oakland's longest losing streak since 2008.
Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer for the White Sox, his team-leading 15th of the season and sixth in the past nine games. Alex Rios and Adam Dunn added RBIs in the three-run fifth that turned a 2-2 tie into a seemingly comfortable 5-2 Chicago advantage.
The late Oakland comeback spoiled a strong start from White Sox starter Edwin Jackson, who is now winless in his last three outings. Jackson allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings while striking out just one batter - his lowest total since July 7 of last season.
Oakland starter Graham Godfrey, making his major-league debut in place of Brett Anderson (elbow), surrendered five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 frames.
