Adrian Gonzalez had three hits and an RBI and David Eckstein scored two runs and drove in another, helping the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 win in the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the New York Mets on Thursday.
The Padres dug out of an early hole with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a double by Eckstein that scored Tony Gwynn Jr. and a single by Gonzalez that plated Eckstein for the 3-2 advantage.
Chase Headley added an RBI double in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Henry Blanco gave the Mets a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer in the second, but that was all the support they could muster for ace Johan Santana.
The Blanco homer was one of only two hits allowed by Padres starter Mat Latos (6-4), who lasted six innings, walking one and striking out eight.
A pair of relievers bridged the gap to closer Heath Bell, who pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save.
Santana (4-3) gave up four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.
