Adam Wainwright pitched eight stellar innings and Colby Rasmus homered as the St. Louis Cardinals recorded a 4-1 triumph over the San Diego Padres.
Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Rasmus scored a pair of runs for the Cardinals, who have won 12 of their last 13 home meetings with the Padres.

Entering having lost five of his previous six starts, Wainwright (19-11) joined Philadelphia's Roy Halladay and Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez as the National League's only 19-game winners by allowing just one run and five hits. The 29-year old, who walked three and struck out seven, held San Diego hitless until Will Venable led off the sixth inning with a single.

Ryan Franklin worked around a double in the ninth for his 25th save in 27 opportunities.

Wainwright received all the support he needed in the first inning. With one out, Jon Jay walked and Albert Pujols singled before Holliday plated the game's first run with a base hit. Rasmus walked to load the bases for Pedro Feliz, who lifted a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 bulge.

Brendan Ryan added a sacrifice fly in the fourth before Rasmus led off the sixth with his 23rd blast of the year, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 cushion.

Jon Garland (14-12) had his three-game road winning streak snapped after surrendering four runs and five hits in seven innings. The veteran, who has lost four of his last five decisions, walked three and struck out four in falling to 1-4 lifetime against St. Louis.

Adrian Gonzalez had an RBI single and Venable collected two hits to go 10-for-15 in the series for the Padres, who are 7-11 in September.
