Four San Francisco players homered and Matt Cain pitched eight solid innings as the visiting Giants routed the San Diego Padres 7-3 on Thursday night.
Homers by Aubrey Huff, Juan Uribe, Buster Posey and Pat Burrell powered San Francisco to the victory that moved the Giants within one game of San Diego in the National League West.
Cain (11-10) gave up three runs and five hits in eight innings while striking out eight and walking one. Will Venable homered off Cain in the third inning and Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run shot in the ninth that ended Cain’s night.
Huff started the homer barrage with a two-run shot against Jon Garland (13-11) in the third inning. Uribe hit a solo homer in the fourth and Posey hit a two-run blast in the fifth.
Pat Burrell greeted Padres reliever Kevin Correia with a homer to lead off the sixth.
Freddy Sanchez had a run-scoring single in the first inning for San Francisco’s only run that didn’t come on a homer. Sanchez and Huff each had three hits for the Giants.
Garland gave up six runs and eight hits in five innings.
