Josh Willingham and Ian Desmond each homered to back a strong showing from John Lannan in the Washington Nationals’ 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday.
Lannan (2-2) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits with no walks in seven innings to win for the first time in seven outings.
Matt Capps worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to record the save.
After the first three batters reached base, Chris Denofria singled in a run to get San Diego within two. Capps then buckled down and notched a pair of strikeouts before inducing a David Eckstein groundout to seal it.
Willingham made it 3-0 in the fourth with a three-run shot before Desmond’s homer pushed it to 4-1 in the seventh.
Denofria brought in his first RBI with a single in the seventh, but the Nationals got it back on Desond’s bunt single in the ninth.
Padres starter Clayton Richard (4-3) allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings in the losing effort.
