Jerry Hairston Jr. hit the game-winning homer for the second consecutive game to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory in 13 innings over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.
Hairston homered to left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the 13th off Mitchell Boggs (0-2), the seventh Cardinals pitcher of the game.
Hairston also homered for the lone run in San Diego’s 1-0 victory over St. Louis on Tuesday.
Edward Mujica (2-0) got the win for the Padres with two perfect innings of relief.
San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth when pinch hitter Matt Stairs hit a two-out double into the left-center field gap to score Adrian Gonzalez from first base.
St. Louis tied the game in the ninth against Padres closer Heath Bell when Ryan Ludwick singled home Skip Schumaker from second.
Schumaker had doubled with two outs when rookie center fielder Luis Durango misplayed a line drive instead of keeping it in front of him for a single.
Both starting pitchers hurled six shutout innings. St. Louis’ Jaime Garcia gave up just three hits, while San Diego’s Kevin Correia allowed five.
