Nate Schierholtz tripled in two runs in the top of the 11th inning to lead the San Francisco Giants past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-0, on Monday.
Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey each singled in front of Schierholtz and scored for the Giants, who pulled to within one-half game of the San Diego Padres in the National League West and within one game of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL wild card race.
Locked in a scoreless draw in into the 11th, Arizona brought in right-hander Aaron Heilman (5-7), who got two quick outs before yielding the singles to Huff and Posey. Schierholtz fouled off a pitch before driving an 0-1 offering to deep center field to score the two runners.
Santiago Casilla (6-2) struck out the side in the 10th to grab the win and Brian Wilson worked the bottom of the 11th for his 41st save.
Madison Bumgarner allowed five hits through 7 1/3 innings for San Francisco, walking one and striking out seven. The rookie left-hander, who has surrendered three earned runs or less in 11 of his 14 starts this season, allowed a double to opposing starter Ian Kennedy leading off the eighth and was removed one batter later.
Kennedy was stranded at third in the eighth when Ramon Ramirez - the third reliever of the frame - got Chris Young to ground into a fielder’s choice, and was replaced by Juan Gutierrez in the ninth. Kennedy was just as strong as Bumgarner, yielding just two hits while walking two and striking out six in eight scoreless frames.
