Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the San Diego Padres ended any hopes of a Seattle comeback with four runs in the eighth for a 7-1 victory over the Mariners on Saturday.
Seattle starter Cliff Lee (4-3) had allowed only one homer in 61 2/3 innings this season, but Gonzalez smacked a two-run shot to center in the first. Lee bounced back and retired 12 in a row, leaving after seven innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked none.
Oscar Salazar hit a three-run homer, his first this season, in the eighth after Chase Headley hit an RBI double, giving San Diego a 7-1 lead.
The Mariners, who have lost five in a row, never could get to Padres starter Wade LeBlanc (4-4), who allowed one run on seven hits in six innings. LeBlanc had a 24.92 ERA in his previous two starts against the Mariners.
Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki had three hits, including a double.
